Electric Water Heaters and Water Heating - a brief guide!
There are two basic types of water heater - 'storage' and 'instantaneous' and then two fundamental types of storage water heater - 'vented' or 'unvented'. Unvented water heaters store water at the incoming mains pressure and offer high flow rates. They allow for the use of normal taps although pressure relief valves are needed and sometimes other accessories as well.

Vented water heaters are low pressure, gravity fed devices, with the storage tank open to the atmosphere. This generally makes for simpler installation since excess pressure build up is not a concern, but there is a catch in that water pressure will be lower, there are more restrictions on siting and - depending on the particular water heater used - it may not be possible to use normal taps.

Larger water storage heaters, whether vented or unvented, generally require you to decide between two further options. These are - 'indirect' (where an indirect source for heating the water is used ie. a gas boiler) or 'direct', where the water is heated by a direct acting element within the heater. Indirect water heaters also include a direct acting element for summer or auxilliary use and generally offer faster recovery times.

Inline and Instantaneous or tankless water heaters do not store water and are designed to work directly from the main cold water supply. They are very efficient since they only consume energy when they are used. Instantaneous water heaters are generally supplied with an inlet valve and open outlet spout for use over wash basins etc . Inline water heaters can be connected to one or more outlets such as wash basins, showers etc and operate automatically as and when hot water is required.
